Just over a year later he was appointed Acting Corporal and promoted full Corporal on 1/1/1889 and continued to make rapid progress with further promotions to Acting Sergeant on 1st August that year and to full Sergeant on 1/4/1890 and to Colour Sergeant a month later on 10/5/1890. Hrre-engaged to complete 12yrs service on 17/3/1892 and it appears that not very long after that he further extended his re-engagement to complete 21yrs service which automatically qualified him for a long service pension. John obtained a 1st Class Certificate of Education on 28/11/1892. He was promoted to Warent Officer 11 on 1/9/1901 and achieved Class 1 status on 1/4/1904. On 12/7/1905 he was formally granted permission to extend his service beyond the approaching 21yrs and was fully discharged on 27/4/1911 having given three months notice in a request to do so. Reference material shows that the Battalion was posted to Rawalpindi, India in 1911 and this impending move may have prompted his request to be discharged.

After serving at home for 11 years og his service John spent the remainder of his career abroad. He served in Malta from Sept 1897-July 1898, then Egypt until September the same year, then Crete until October 1899, then South Africa until September 1902, back to Egypt until November 1905 and finally to India for 5yrs until he was discharged. John was involved in the Battalion in the 1898 Sudan War and was awarded The Queen's Sudan Medal 1886-90 that was awarded for the campaign. The 2nd Battalion Rifle Brigade was also engaged in the Boar War. Medal Rolls show he was awarded The Queen's South Africa Medal with the Belfast, Tegula Heights, Relief of Ladysmith and Laing's Nek clasps and The King's South Africa Medal with South Africa 1901 & South Africa 1902 clasps. More importantly, John was mentioned in association with General Buller's despatch of 8/2/1901 from the front and was subsequently awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantry. No particular citation could be found but together with others involved a submission th The King was made on 18/4/1902 and the medal was awarded the following day.

Having given three months official notice John was discharged on 27/4/1911, his discharge papers show that he had grown to 6ft 1in and his overall career conduct and character was rated  'Exemplary, Thoroughly sober and reliable - a most excellent man in every way'. He was granted permission to remain in India and his intended place of residence appears to have been No.18, Lal Bazar, Calcutta, the Headquarters of the Calcutta Police, having  joined the Calcutta Police Department as a Superintendant of Police. John was shot by a rioter during the 'Komagata Maru Incident' at Budge-Budge, near Calcutta on 29/9/1914, he died from a bullet wound to his abdomin with traumatic spinal paralysis on 3/10/1914.
