Descendants of William Bartholomew of Saint Mary Islington, & Highgate, Middlesex
1. William Bartholomew born circa.1782 outside Middlesex. Occupation variously described as a Shopkeeper, Clerk, Distiller, Independant, married Sophia Townshend at Saint Mary, Islington in 1810. ( Sophia Townshend born circa.1784 Middlesex daughter of James Townshend, died 23/10/1842 at No.2, Brunswick Grove, Hornsey Road, Islington ) William Bartholomew made his last Will & Testament on 2/7/1846 and died of Apoplexy & paralysis of 5yrs on 25/8/1846 outside the Woodman Inn, Highgate, his son Thomas Bartholomew of Highgate was the informant on his death certificate. William is buried at Highgate Cemetery (Western), Highgate alongside his wife Sophia who was buried there in 1842.
The Last Will & Testament of William Bartholomew, Gentleman of St. Mary Islington
This is the last Will and Testament of me William Bartholomew of the Parish of Saint Mary Islington in the County of Middlesex, Gentleman made the 2/7/1846. And in the first place I fitest that all my just costs and funeral and testamentary expenses may be fully paid and satisfied by my Executors herein after named out of my personal estate and I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Bartholomew all that ~~~copyhold cottage or tenament with the appartacaures situate at Highgate in the County of Middlesex being numbered 1 Cottage Bartholomew Place held by me of the Lord of the Manor of Harringay otherwise xxxx in the said County now in the occupation of Mr. Musk to hold to him my said son his heirs assignors for ever and I give devise and bequeath unto my son William James Bartholomew all that my copyhold cottage or tenament with the appartacaures being No.2 in Bartholomew Place aforesaid within the same situation now occupied of xxxx Wood to hold to him my said son his heirs and assignors forever and I give and bequeath unto my daughter Charlotte Ashton wife of John Ashton all that my copyhold cottage or tenament with the appartacaures being No.3 Bartholomew Place within the said Manor unto in the occupation of ~~~~~Warrington to hold xxxx to her my said daughter her heirs and assignors for her own sole and separate use and benefit free from the control debts engagements or intermeddling of her said husband or any other husband she may marry and I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Sophia Matilda Bartholomew all that my copyhold cottage or tenament with the appartacaures being No.4 Bartholomew Place aforesaid unto in the occupation of ~~~~~ Playfoot to hold the same for her my said daughter her heirs and assignors forever and for her own sole benefit free from the control debts engagements or intermeddling of any husband she may marry and I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Bartholomew all that my leasehold messuage or tenament with the appartacaures situate in the Hornsey Road in the said Parish of Saint Mary Islington in the occupation of ~~~~~ Boyc to hold to him my said son his executors administrators and assignors for all my term and interest in the lease under which I hold the same the paying the ground rent and performing the several covenants in the said lease xxxxxxx and I also give and bequeath to my said son Thomas Bartholomew my aged day Kosle and large family bible and to my said daughter Sophia Matilda all other my household goods furniture and effects that may be in my dwelling house at the time of my decease to and for her own sole use and benefit and as for all other my leasehold estates situate at Upper Holloway aforsaid and Highgate. And all other my Estate whatsoever and wheresoever and of what nature or kind soever subject to the payment of my said debts funeral and testamentary expenses as aforesaid. I give and bequeath unto my said sons Thomas and William James Bartholomew and my said daughters Charlotte Ashton and Sophia Matilda Bartholomew cordially to be divided between them share and share alike the shares of my said two daughters to be for their own sole and separate use and benefit and not to be subject or liable to the control or debts or engagements of their respective husbands and I declare that the receipt or receipts of outh of my said two daughters as are under xxxxxx shall be sufficient discharge to my Executors and lastly I hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said son Thomas Bartholomew and William James Bartholomew joint Executors of this my last Will. I hereby revoke all other Wills made by me at any time made and do declare this only to be and contain my last Will and Testament. Proved at London 4th March 1847 before the worshipfull James Barker Deane Sortor of Saros and Surragate by the oaths of Thomas Bartholomew and William James Bartholomew the sons the Executors to whom xxxxx was granted having been firstsworn duly to ~~ ~~ administer.

Thomas Bartholomew was born on 8/1/1819 and baptised on 1/8/1819 in St. Mary Islington son of William Bartholomew & Sophia Townshend daughter of James Townshend a builder & bricklayer of Highgate. Occupation Tin-man, Tin-plate worker, Blacksmith & Bellhanger and later a Gas Fitter. Thomas Bartholomew of Highgate married (1) Jane Elizabeth Thompson a spinster of Highgate and daughter of John Thompson and Mary Arnold of Highgate at The Parish Church, Islington on 30/7/1841, witnessed by William Bartholomew and Mary Ann Thompson. Jane died in 1866 and Thomas then a Gas Fitter of Salisbury Road, Upper Holloway married (2) Widow Frances Starkey Ellis nee Hawes daughter of George Hawes a printer, on 4/6/1868 at St. Luke, West Holloway, Islington. Thomas Bartgholomew died in 1880 London Central.

Jane Mary Elizabeth Bartholomew was born in1842 Highgate, duaghter of Thomas Bartholomew and Jane Elizabeth Thompson., married Samuel Starkey Ellis in Edmonton 1866., no issue., died 1902 Islington. (nb. at 1891 census - Ernest William E. Spring, godson, born.1878, Chase Side, Enfield, Middlesex)
3.ii. Thomas John James Bartholomew was born on 5/6/1844 in Highgate, Middlesex son of Thomas Bartholomew and Jane Elizabeth Thompson. Thomas John James Bartholomew, a batchelor and Plumber of Bride Terrace married Eliza Rackliff a spinster of Compton Road, daughter of Esther Rackliff on 25/12/1867 at the Parish Church, Islington, witnessed by Samuel Ellis and Clara Curd., died Edmonton 1921.
